If I can draw, paint, print or stamp a tree and bird onto anything, I am happy...

Drawing

Drawing mediums I like to use are primarily ink based, whether that be with a dip pen and Indian ink or a chunky marker. Of course, there is always call for a pencil, but unless they are metallic or white for black paper, I limit them for technical aids, such as transferring a design to lino. I have fond memories of drawing for an annual black and white calendar at primary school, with help from my teacher who showed me mark-making for texture and pattern.

Painting

Much of my earlier work was made using Acrylic or Gouache, but now I love to use inks and watercolours. There is something about using a paintbrush which feels natural to me, and of course, I am a big fan of colour. I specialised in painting for my art degree, and spent many a happy hour working on large scale work, with watered down acrylics, on unstretched canvas on the floor. These days I am much more restrained but I like to work instinctively without too much planning.

Lino printing

It was a natural progression for me to go from ink drawings into printmaking. I wanted to simplify my designs and block printing enabled me to do this. I also wanted to create my own prints alongside reproductions of my work for sale. I enjoy the physical processes of lino printing, not to mention the smell of the cut lino and ink! It has taken my art in new directions, and I love to see a lino line hanging up to dry.

Ceramics

I returned to ceramics having not done any since college. This led me to start pressing my retired lino blocks into clay, which coincided with my exploring drawings with metallic inks. Whilst drawing I couldn't help thinking about clay. I made a set of stamps to develop my surface design and have found that imprints, and screen printing onto clay has given me freedom to play, explore ideas and express myself further.

Collage

Collage is a medium that I work with sometimes, creating one off pieces for friends and family for special occasions. It is satisfying to move elements around to get the composition right without a major commitment. Playing with my old imagery has given it new life and I can continue to explore those repeat patterns I love so much. I think I'll be creating more collages from my own work very soon.
